Protestant Missionaries, Schools, and Churches in Meiji Yokohama (1859–1901)

If you find the origins of Saint Maur interesting, perhaps you would also like to read more about the other Christian missionaries who arrived in Yokohama during the Meiji period. A bonus chapter has been added to this website, spotlighting the women and men who (like Mère Mathilde Raclot) contributed to the growth of Japan over one hundred years ago. It begins like this:

"The history of Christian and international education in Yokohama is not complete without attention to the Protestant missionaries who arrived in the late 19th century, as well as those who introduced other branches of Christianity to Japan in Yokohama. Their goals were varied, including the spread of Western medical science, as well as encouraging conversion to Christianity. The schools that they established, all originally in the same Yokohama neighborhood atop the Bluff, have contributed to the education of generations of young people, especially Japanese girls and women."
